Our City of Neighborhoods

November 18, 2009 by Antonio Garcia

Traditionally cut along ethnic divides and railways, Chicago's 77 "community areas" are typically so different and disconnected from each other that understanding and relating them can be a complex and challenging maneuver. Firebelly knows this firsthand, working for both Humboldt Park and Wicker Park Bucktown.

Thanks to a new tool on our friend Justin Massa's nonprofit site MoveSmart.org, Chicago's neighborhoods are getting easier to research, explore and understand. The site's Neighborhood Finder provides Chicagoans with interactive maps and data so they can search the City's neighborhoods in smarter, more innovative ways. MoveSmart.org's methodologies are a positive and powerful step to helping natives and newcomers overcome the stereotypes, ignorance and prejudice held by so many regarding communities outside their own. If you dig their approach, support 'em!

Creating Surveys Using GoogleDocs

August 12, 2009 by Antonio Garcia

As AIGA XCD ramps up for its big China Expedition, I'll be working with the Communications Committee to redesign the group's website, blog and newsletter. In order to meet the needs of those interested in cross-cultural design, we have to know what parts of our web offerings people find useful and what can be done to improve them.

My first thought was to create a simple questionnaire using Survey Monkey because it was the most familiar to me. But a colleague mentioned trying GoogleDocs as an alternative, so I gave it a shot—and ended up liking it.

Of course it's free and collects all the data in a powerful spreadsheet with all the sharing and accessibility you'd expect from a Google document. But there are also some decent templates (better than expected) and the setup was super easy. You can check out the one I made and let me know what you think. Also, are there any other free online survey makers I should try?
