I came to know Need Magazine after receiving a subscription from Antonio as a gift (thanks again AG). I've received 3 issues so far and I'll say, it's the most inspiring and truly altruistic view of the world of social good in a magazine I've seen. They document projects and groups all over the world with vivid imagery and telling stories.
Get a subscription, they're only $27 and it's pretty impossible to find it on the shelves of you local bookstore anyway. If you can't afford it, at least check out their blog or get a digital version of their first issue for free.
Need was designed by a firm up in Minneapolis, Fusion Hill. They have done a great job in keeping it simple and letting the words and picutures tell the stories.
Check it out and let me know what you think!

This quarter at Chicago Portfolio School, we've decided to use this book as a loose reference guide throughout the tiered type classes. It's one of the few information-based type books I haven't read so I thought I'd post some thoughts.
If you're looking to refresh your type terminology and basic typographic application, then this book is a must read. Visuals enhance content on nearly every page and external references supply hours of intensive research beyond the scope of this book. Quite often, I was rewarded with a side note relating to deeper resources on the topic at hand. The varied exercises pulled from real-world class examples, following each section, are a big help for brainstorming class projects and assignments.
I read it over a long weekend so fear not, the printed page. If you're looking to refresh your knowledge, it's a must. If you want something more conceptually intensive, look elsewhere.
