Design/Process

October 08, 2009 by Darren McPherson

Lately I've been thinking a lot about the importance of reflecting back on the design process. We spend so much time on research, testing materials/styles and building ideas but much of which is unseen. As hard as we try, great ideas and successes in the design process early on are hidden in the end result due to the fact that as designers we are constantly evolving our work, even up until the last hour.

Personally, I want to change this. Whether it was a violently frustrating process that took 30x longer than expected to finish the design or it was a fluke accident that lead to the most creative solution, I'm searching for a way to document everything I do throughout the course of design projects.

I'm not going to mention all of how I've started it just yet, but instead pose this question. How do you or would you document the design process? What way does justice to the work that you put in?

Is it a documentation of the music listened to while working or the scanning of 100 pages of sketches and notes? I know that for me personally, the music I'm listening to can completely change the way I feel about a project. During frustration I simply turn on Empire of the Sun to calm down and during boredom I'll listen to a Boys Noize remix to fire me up.

Either way, let me know what you think! I'll do another post soon enough with a bit of the process work I'm currently putting together.

Working Outside of Work!

September 28, 2009 by Darren McPherson

Following the first Firebelly exhibition I've had the opportunity to be a part of this last weekend, I've thought a lot about maintaining the creative side of my work outside of the office.

Part of the reason I'm here is due to the encouragement these guys gave me when I first met them all. My main question coming into the design community was how do you get a chance to do the types of work that you love doing but aren't always affordable and practical within the allotted timeline.. the FB answer - you just do it.

These last couple of weeks have been a real eye opener as we all worked hard on pieces for the gallery show. All the effort paid off and we had a really successful opening night.

For me, talking with so many people about my work and getting a ton of feedback on the pieces/concepts was a huge help and a massive encouragement to do more. I'm definitely pumped to push things a lot harder now.

My new goals for the season… Work consistently multiple times a week. Collaborate with others on projects, and get the work out there for feedback as much as possible!

Anyone reading this should do the same. Keep creating work for yourself. You need a moment to try something somewhat crazy every now and then.
