Nothing's better than the real thing, right? Well that depends on what the real thing is made of. When it's paper, plastic or aluminum the fake might be, well...better. I am loving the ongoing trend of remaking what was once disposable reusable. I first spotted this trend seven years ago at a Parisian boutique, scoring two small porcelain versions of a crushed mini dixie cup - the small plastic kind you might use in a bathroom. Now I see it popping up all over with the popularity of DCI's porcelain "paper" coffee cup and artists like Lorena Barrezueta's refashioning of aluminum food containers in candy colored porcelain or Glasstique's "plastic" water bottle decanters in borosilicate glass - the material test tubes are made of. These items are so pretty you could display them on the shelf with your grandma's china or on the counter near your collection of wooden fruit (anyone?). What makes these objets d'art even better is that they need never end up in your neighborhood landfill, now that's good design.
