If you've been following the Beijing Olympics you might have already seen Nike's new commercial in support of the US Men's Basketball Team. Produced by w+k, the ad features archival footage of Marvin Gaye performing the National Anthem at the 1983 NBA All-Star Game in Los Angeles interspersed with warm-up clips from this year's Olympic team.
Apparently, it all started when Coach K (Duke's Mike Krzyzewski) played Gaye's soulful version of The Star Spangled Banner to inspire his team of young Olympians. The remixed version for the commercial adds a simple 80s soul beat, but the impact and patriotism is all still intact.
If you know anything about me, you know I only wear Puma sneakers and rarely follow sports (I decide whether I'm going to follow the Olympics based on how cool/cute the mascot is!), but I have to admit I get chills every time I watch this commercial. Instant classic.
