Theatre Launches Emergency Campaign to Stabilize Finances during Economic Downturn

February 25, 2009 by Dawn Hancock

I don't normally use this space to ask for donations, but I feel this is an exception that is absolutely necessary for a great group I have a huge amount of respect + love for.

About Face Theatre is in danger of closing its doors after 14 years. For those who don't know the theatre company, it was created by two great men who had a vision of making a theatre company that would advance the national dialogue on gender and sexual identity, as well as create a youth theatre that serves as a safe and supportive environment for LGBTQ youth and their allies. Since its inception, they have premiered more than 30 new plays by writers and directors who have been recognized with several Tony Awards, The Pulitzer Prize for Drama, MacArthur Fellowships and dozens of Jefferson Awards. They are damn good. It's rare I don't leave one of their plays and feel inspired.

It might not seem as though a theatre would be the best place to donate to in these tough times, but what I can tell you from my own personal experience is that they are much more than just a theatre company. They do incredibly work that is instrumental to the queer community on a social level, especially for the youth they work with and serve. I know because I have talked to them personally and have heard their stories.

Please don't let them disappear. Even if you only have $10 it all adds up. Help today!

Flow

Down the drain

February 23, 2009 by James Matthews

I think about a lot of different things while in the shower and recently my thoughts have been on the hot topic of water. The water we need, the water we use, and the water we tend to waste....oh and the waste we put in all of that water.

I'm never quite sure what to do when presented with fatalistic facts like water shortage, floating islands of trash, ozone depletion, genocide. For this one, I wanted to learn more and decided to rent the documentary FLOW. It hits hard with a scary truth but we all need to watch it NOW!

The site directs you and me to direct action we can take to help us all stay afloat and pay attention.
