Is Health Care YOUR Priority?

December 22, 2008 by Jeanie Kirk

Last week MoveOn.org polled its members asking about their top priorities for next the administration/government. By the end of the week the results were in:

1. Universal Health Care

2. Economic Recovery and Job Creation

3. Build a Green Economy and Stop Climate Change

4. End the War in Iraq

In an email I received, MoveOn.org gave these statistics about the efforts: "Over the course of the week, we received more than 78,000 nominations, 1.6 MILLION ratings and 806, 707 votes."

Were you part of the vote? Do you think these four should be at the top of Obama's priority list?

I've also been intrigued by some emails from the Obama campaign itself. The jist of this correspondence has been encouragement to host and attend house parties focusing on just how exactly to 'fix' our health care woes. House party participants are asked to propose and debate their ideas for the future of American health care. Here's a video speaking to this.

My question is: are these efforts inspiring? Have you tired of political talk or do you think, now that we've elected Barack, we, as democratic participants in the governing of the United States, are just beginning the work that will be done in the next four years? Do you feel part of something?

Wear A Helmet!

December 15, 2008

If you ride a bike, please wear a  helmet! It doesn't matter if you don't think they look cool... wearing a helmet is cool. Seriously.

I usually wear one, but of  course one of the few times I wasn't, I got it.  It wasn't my fault.

I am extremely lucky, but regardless, I had an overnight stay in the hospital and a nice set of stitches. My first – and hopefully last, on both accounts.

You can find a helmet for less than $20 here. All helmets are certified by the same standards, so the price has nothing to do with how the helmet will protect you. A $20 helmet will protect your head just the same as a $200 helmet. There is no excuse not to have one!

Be safe!

If you are in the area, you can drop off at our studio — otherwise, please send them yourself. We are closed on Monday for MLK, but anytime on Tuesday would be great. If you think you won’t be able to get them here on Tuesday, then please send them to the Miami address. Thanks so much!
